Recipe: Jell-O Cabbage Salad

Ingredients:
• 1 pkg (3 oz.) lime Jell-O
• 1 cup boiling water
• 3 tbsp sugar
• 1 cup cold water
• 2 tbsp vinegar
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 cup shredded raw cabbage
• 1 cup grated raw carrots

Directions:
Prepare Jell-O in boiling water and stir in sugar. Add cold water, vinegar, and salt. Chill.
When slightly thickened, fold in cabbage and carrots. Chill.
Serve and enjoy or be grossed out!
Our first bites were disgusting because the salt (and salt mingling with all the sugar) was overpowering and awful. The second and third days it tasted better, though. If I make it again I would omit the salt and probably cut back on the sugar.

Source: My mom remembered her grandma and mom making it years and years ago, so we searched for a recipe and chose this one out of the many that sounded even grosser. Thanks, Grandma Wallace and Grandma Sydnor! :D

Recipe: Beef Taco Skillet ("Ranchero Style")

Ingredients:
• 1 lb. ground beef
• 1 jar (12 oz.) salsa
• 1 package taco seasoning
• 1 package white corn tortillas, cut into triangles
• 1 can (~15 oz.) corn

Directions:
Brown beef in skillet, drain grease. Add salsa, seasoning, and tortillas and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer, add corn, and cook for 5 more minutes.
The tortillas got really mushy and sort of disintegrated…my sister suggested that next time we should bake them first to see if they’d stay crunchier in the recipe.

Source: Adapted from a Campbell’s recipe that sounded …not good.
Jun. 19, 2009 - 02:17 AM - Completed Task: #032: see Niagara Falls
globe in nature
Date: 6/11/09
Task: see Niagara Falls
Reason: It’s a natural wonder, and we’d be driving right past it on the way to Toronto, ON. So it was automatically added to the list.

The Falls are gorgeous and so, so very impressive. You really can’t understand the magnitude from pictures—it’s something you have to see for yourself. We went to the Toronto side since it’s allegedly much prettier (and I believe that). It was so big and loud and misty and amazing. I want to go back and see it again. Ughhhh so amazing. Task: travel to another country
Reason: Originally Kathryn’s idea because she wanted to see the Hockey Hall of Fame, which happens to be in Toronto, I approved it once we discovered how cheap some hotels in the area were and how close (so not the longest drive) it is. So we asked Caitlin, didn’t even have to do any convincing, and there we were, planning a summer trip to Canada!

It was lots of fun: we went to Niagara Falls, Ontario Science Centre, Harbourfront Centre, Hockey Hall of Fame, Kensington Market (and walked around during “Woofstock” with a million dog owners), Riverdale Farm, and a triple-header of ball hockey. Fb album #1 & Fb album #2 I really want to go back again sometime to see all the things we missed out on.
Jun. 8, 2009 - 11:14 PM - Completed Task: #030: get a passport

Date: 6/8/09
Task: get a passport
Reason: A little bit this was cheating to fill out my list a little more. I added it while in Kathryn’s basement after the revelation that we NEEDED to go to Canada because it was surprisingly cheap, and because you can’t go without a passport. J

It’s too bad this was a stressful ordeal: I applied for it in mid-March (allowing almost 3 months!), got a letter in mid-April saying they couldn’t verify my identity and I needed to send in photocopies of several types of documents, didn’t get around to finally gathering them all and sending ‘em till mid-May, and am leaving in early-June. Gah. But it finally came, three days before I’m supposed to leave, but it came.
”+1” )
At least since we’re only going to Canada and since I’m not going to be flying anywhere outside the U.S. in the next ten years I only needed to get the Passport Card, not the full Book, so it was much cheaper.

Task: 054 stay out all night for no reason
Reason: This was a suggestion from Alex and I loved it. I'm so happy, too, that it really was a spontaneous night of mayhem till after 4AM before I finally decided not to go back to my own place.

I got to spend it with her and some other friends during/after the Epic Scavenger Hunt night. One of the most memorable nights of my life consisted of our fountain-swimming stints, some sidewalk chalking and Testudo kissing, a little stadium B&E and climbing, and then talking with Susie and Telisha till the sun came up and we finally settled in to sleep. I want this to happen every night.

Task: 044 swim in the fountain on the mall
Reason: This is practically a right of passage for UMD students. In front of McKeldin library there is this great multi-tiered fountain. It's really gross and probably not properly filtered, but it's also so pretty and great for midnight swims.

Partially for the Epic Scavenger Hunt, partially for this 101 list, and partially because I was having the best night of my life with some of my closest friends, I swam in the McKeldin mall fountain and the adorable one outside the BRB (aka Bioscience Research Building aka my favorite/home).

-Using the BRB fountain as a hot tub
-Matt trying to help me doggy paddle in the BRB fountain

Task: 094 climb a tree
Reason: Yet another thing to do for no reason but to have fun. I hadn't climbed a tree in a while anyway, and I think you should never stop doing that.

This was also yet another thing on the Epic Scavenger Hunt list, so George, Matt, and I all climbed a tree outside Memorial Chapel and got bonus points for getting a picture of us all in it together. Here is a failed attempt and a good one.

Task: 048 make a cliché prank call in which I ask the person if his refrigerator is running
Reason: Morgan came up with this suggestion; it's another I added to the list to keep it fun.

Then she and Jeff did one better and put it on the list for an Epic Scavenger Hunt we all did. I was on a team with my friends Matt and George, and they of course were "mak[ing] [me] do all the embarrassing things"...but this one worked out so I could cross it off the list! We ended up calling our friend Brady who answered the call from a restricted number and even played along grudgingly when he realized it was a prank call. I surprised myself and the guys by using a decent fake Russian-ish accent and not laughing during the whole thing! :)
Here's a video, but I don't know what privacy settings it's set to or if you can see it: "I think you better go catch it"

Task: 060 go to Madam Tussaud's
Reason: This was definitely something Kathryn came up with for her list that I stole to do with her. :P

We went for Kathryn's belated birthday. The wax museum was pretty neat and it was fun to pose with all the figures. I didn't take pictures and I'm pretty sure her albums can't be viewed by the public so no luck here with pictures. But just trust that we took some epic ones. :D

Recipe: Pretzel Sandwiches

Ingredients:
• pretzels
• smoked turkey
• ranch dressing

Directions:
Umm… Top pretzels with a sliver of turkey, ranch dressing, and another pretzel.

This is also some last minute scrambling to make up a recipe, but it was still really good and at least I was a teensy bit creative this time! The ranch was of course delicious with the pretzels, and however Commons shop does that smoked deli turkey is a great way to do it...so good.

Task: 002 go to the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC
Reason: The cherry blossoms are pretty trees and D.C. advertises so damn much that why not go see them and take part in the tourism. :D Plus, it's a fun thing to do with the friends as a break from school.

We actually went two weekends in a row! The first weekend with he bigger group, and the second just a few of us went back for the parade. It was fun both times. Here are my facebook albums: 1 & 2

Recipe: Fake Pizza

Ingredients:
• dinner rolls
• Ragu pizza sauce
• mozzarella cheese
• Hormel pepperoni

Directions:
This is pretty obvious. Also obvious is that it was really last-minute and kind of cheating since I was running out of time for the month. This was all I could think of to throw together from Commons shop and with no oven or kitchen in my suite, and using only a microwave. I know, lame.

Task: 016 go see at least one of the following bands in concert jk, changed to any concert
Reason: I just hadn't been to a concert in quite some time and was eager to go see a live band.

The first real concert I went to in these 1001 days was Lit at Santa Fe Café in College Park. The opening band was Hotspur and they sounded okay from my seat waiting for the slowest food ever to get to the table and our waitress to never come back with the check. But I was really antsy so we hurried to the stage as soon as we paid, caught the end of their act, and I got up front for Lit to come on. The concert was so great, and they were really energetic. Plus since they could see me singing along I got picks from Jeremy and Kevin. Some d-bag in the crowd threw a bottle that hit A. Jay and it bounced off him and was about to hit me when I caught it. So that was scary. But he held my hand some. :)
I haven't uploaded the pictures to photobucket yet and I can't now with dial-up, but here is the facebook album: click me! & LJ post

But in February this acoustic rapper from Georgia, Heath McNease performed a little set at Stamp. He was entertaining and had a nice voice. And a few songs were actually cute, plus he did covers and freestyled a little. It was definitely something different to hear someone switching from gospel-sounding things to Britney to rapping about Nintendos.
In April Matt Wertz came to campus and played a really small, intimate little concert in the chapel here and made me fall in love with him. His songs are just so pretty, and he's adorable and looks younger than he actually is.
See pictures of both wonderful guys here & & LJ post

I also saw Ludacris in concert, though! He came for Art Attack at UMD this year and was excellent. He brought with him ...uh...I forget the first guy, two guys from Duffle Bag Boy, and Shawnna, who was a badass on the mic and the fastest rapper I've heard. She was sooo good.
I also only have a facebook album for this one: click me too! & LJ post

Task: 089 eat a full meal using chopsticks
Reason: Well whenever chopsticks come with a meal, like at Noodles, I always half-assedly (I know that's not a word) try to use them and give up when I fail and feel lame. Plus every time someone teaches me how to use them I forget...and feel lame some more.

But one day at Mongolian Grill at lunch with Caitlin I finally managed to down my entire bowl of stir-fry with chopsticks! It was not only delicious, but also fulfilling. :) And I promise I've learned the proper technique for good now.

Task: 038 meet someone famous
Reason: This was a great suggestion by Jeff. Why not? Meeting famous people and getting autographs is always fun. And it makes for great stories and photo ops.

Kathryn, Caitlin, and I Metro’d out to Ballston to Kettler Capitals Iceplex one Saturday to watch the Caps practice. After practice was over we waited with all the other fans outside for some of them to come out and give autographs. We met Tom Poti, Tyler Sloan, Brooks Laich, Mike Green, and Nicklas Backstrom. And Ovi’s dad was there, haha. But we didn’t go over to him. It was really neat, except for when we attracted a crowd to Brooks when he was trying sneakily escape to lunch with his family...sorry!

But since then I've also had the pleasure to "meet" the guys from Lit sort of...I think telling them I'm a fan and getting picks and holding my hands counts, don't you? :) I also plan on meeting whatever comedians come to campus for our homecomings comedy shows over the next few years like I have before.

Task: 073 dance on stage at Thirsty Turtle (again)
Reason: This was probably added to the list as I was desperately trying to finish it in time to start on Jan. 1st, but I thought it would be fun to do. I tried to keep a nice balance between important, meaningful things and lighthearted ones that are just for fun and to keep this mission from getting too serious.

Turtle is pretty much our go-to bar at school and I always have fun there. Dancing on stage is also something to force me to have more fun and be outgoing. Of course, it always takes a little liquid courage, but it's still a great time with my friends. Matt even got a picture one time, but I think it turned out too dark. :(

Task: 100 ride on every color line of the Metro [5/5]
Reason: Kathryn and I came up with this one while trying to finish our lists back on New Year's. It's partly a fun, cute thing to do and to be able to say you've done. It also should be mandatory for someone who lives as close to D.C. and to a bunch of the stations here in P.G. as I do. There're a ton of things to do all around and we've been using Metro more and more since living on campus.

P.S. I love the newly redesigned wmata website.
Lines: Green, Red, Orange, Blue, Yellow

Rode the Green & Red on New Year's when Kathryn and I went to see all the monuments and go to a Caps game that night. (Plus we ride the Green line from CP all the time anyway.)
Rode the Orange line from my friend Tommy's house to go see the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Rode the Blue and Yellow lines with the girls when we went to the National Geographic Museum and to eat at Georgetown cupcakes (mmmm) one weekend.

Task: 035 eat 11 things I've never eaten before [11/11]
Reason: I’m a pretty picky eater, or I have been up until now. Okay, no, I still am. But this was a really good challenge for me since it just forced me to try new things. And why stop at just 11 new things when this was so easy I've already finished and there's so much out there? So I think I'll just keep going, but here are my first eleven.

01. fresh pineapple
02. kotopita (Greek chicken pie)
03. creamy garden vegetable soup
04. cinnamon French toast
05. lobster (in seafood pasta)
06. double chocolate roulade
07. pizza fries
08. fried zuchini
09. tiramisu
10. poached pear
11. tilapia milanese
